Concerning the purchase of French wine (Sauterne): "The best crop is that of the Countess de Lur-Saluce." Advises Gerry to address himself to "Mr. [Joseph] Fenwick our Consul in Bordeaux to whom I gave a note of this wine." In 1790, President George Washington commissioned Joseph Fenwick of Maryland as the first American consul to Bordeaux. The letter also includes a recipe for horse fodder.
